Dual Boot Then, Triple Boot Now

Lest you think the team at OnMac.net (you know, the crowd that brought us the original Windows-on-Mac bootloader) would pack it in now that Apple has moved into their turf with Boot Camp, they've come back with a new hack that allows Boot Camp to be used to triple boot your Mac. That's right: no longer are you limited to a mere two operating systems when you start your Mac. Now, you can have a choice of OS X, Windows XP and the Linux distro of your choice (they went with gentoo). Their solution for this turns out to be fairly straightforward: rather than attempting to hack Boot Camp, they've chained the lilo bootloader to run off of the Windows loader. So, Boot Camp still shows you just two options -- OS X and Windows XP -- but if you choose Windows, you then get a second set of choices, which lets you pick Linux or XP. Now that this is done, we're waiting for someone to go to four: we really want to be able to boot into OS/2 Warp, and we suspect the solution is just around the corner.

Bluetooth to receive speed boost by 2008

The Bluetooth SIG, the industry group behind Bluetooth wireless standard, announced on Tuesday it is developing a new version of the technology to meet the high-speed demands for data transfer of high quality video and audio on portable devices like the iPod, multi-media projectors and television sets.

The group said it has selected the WiMedia Alliance multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) version of ultra-wideband (UWB) for integration with current Bluetooth wireless technology, thus taking the next step in its plan to develop a version of the technology that can transmit data at speeds equivalent to USB or FireWire at distances up to 10 feet.

Apple Patent on Virtual Speakers

Macsimumnews.com summarizes an Apple filing with the European Patent Office, under the name "Audio system, loudspeaker and method of operation thereof".

The patent, accompanied by drawings, describes a speaker system used in combination with a "computing device" that controls loudspeakers to provide the effect of having five speakers when there are in fact only two. The other three are "virtual speakers". The "computing device" could be a computer located in the interior of a speaker.

Final Cut Studio Now Universal

Final Cut Studio 5.1, consisting of Final Cut Pro 5, Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, and DVD Studio Pro 4, is now available as a Universal application, native on both Intel and PowerPC Macs.

New copies of Final Cut Studio 5.1 cost $1,299 USD. Upgrade pricing (from Apple's crossgrade page): $699 upgrade from Final Cut Pro 1, Final Cut Pro 2, or Final Cut Pro 3; $199 upgrade from Final Cut Pro 4 or HD, Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro 4, or Production Suite; $99 upgrade from Final Cut Pro 5; $49 upgrade from Final Cut Studio.

Apple's pro media applications have been packaged as Final Cut Studio since Final Cut Pro 5 was announced in April last year.

Final Cut Express HD is not yet Universal. According to the online Apple Store, "The next feature release of Final Cut Express will be a Universal application, which will run natively on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Mac computers."

Manhattan Apple store to be first 24/7 location

Apple's upcoming midtown Manhattan retail store will mark a first for the company as sources report the location will be open 24 hours a day. The store, located in the underground retail plaza of the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Street will also be among the first stores to offer customers an iPod Bar.

These latest seeds reportedly list few if any known issues, depending on distribution and release notes accompanying the various distributions.

Having Fun with Apple MacBook Pro

I earlier had a chance to play around with my friend's new Apple MacBook Pro and I can really say that it's damn fast as what earlier reports say.

I also had fun especially testing out the built-in iSight integrated on the MacBook Pro. As soon as the MacBook Pro started, I immediately opened up the PhotoBooth application and I can really attest that It was fun. You can check on the images I took with it. Now I'm too envy to get my own MacBook Pro so I guess it's time again to save up big time.

Apple's Spring Media Event

Brace yourself for Apple is scheduled to hold an event sometime on or before April 1, 2006. This could mean new products will be out in time for Apple's 30th anniversary. So what would your wild guesses for the new products will be?

Could it be a 12-inch MacBook Pro or perhaps the 17-incher, or could it be an Intel Core Duo version on an iBook? Some are really confident that Apple would finally release a true iPod video or a wireless or Bluetooth version of the Apple Mighty Mouse. Or could they be announcing the next MAC OS X code named Leopard?

Who knows, until the event happens and until Steve Jobs will unveil the good news, then we can just hope and cross our fingers for what is yet to come from Apple.
